This painting uses the same composition as Caravaggio's The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. The patron commissioned me to replace her head with Saint John's, and two men's faces are inserted per her request. A performance on the theme of betrayal occurred in Chicago on February 9th, 2013, with music and readings - this painting among the festivities. In the future I would love to do more "soul work" paintings for commission. Deep inner journeys go on every day, and some people would enjoy commemorating them in a painting, sort of like a rite of passage. Making the painting: I used gouache as a first pass, bright colors in a limited palette to make the painting my own. I went through with transparent watercolor on a second and third pass to finish out the details.
